Doug Mirabelli: Further Experimentation With Exclamation Points!!!!
The Red Sox are about to re-sign Doug Mirabelli! He will back up Jason Varitek for a seventh season! His OPS+ hasn't been above 90 since 2004! He struck out more times than he reached base each of the last three years!
But guess what! No other backup on the market can hit any better! And they can't catch a knuckleball! So, welcome back, Dougie! Let's shoot for Ring No. 3!

Now, Paul, doesn't that make you feel better!

It does!
In truth, though, I don't think this is a bad signing at all. Baseball in general just has no good backup catchers, and the good-hitting prospects all seem to have trouble catching. At least Mirabelli's only costing $500,000.
But that does give us a year with two catchers in their late 30s. That's a disaster waiting to happen...

They're talking about 10m a year extension for Varitek.

Interesting point about Sox catching prospect Kottaras here that relates to this story...

From waswatching.com:
"On the drive home tonight, from work, I caught the very last minutes of The Show on X-Radio (MLB Home Plate) with Rob Dibble and Kevin Kennedy.
At that time, Kevin Kennedy was addressing a caller who had some thoughts on the Mitchell Report.
I was pretty surprised at what Kennedy had to say there. In wanting to make a point about the Mitchell Report not being the all-inclusive bible of naming PED users, Kevin Kennedy said that a current colleague of his, who was with the Boston Red Sox in 2004, told him that he (the colleague) witnessed, for a fact, a member of the '04 Red Sox injecting himself in the buttocks with a needle full of PEDs. Kennedy said that the user is no longer a member of the Red Sox - but, he was a player on the team that won the ring in 2004. As per Kennedy, his colleague said that the "user" was giving a demo (to the "colleague") on how to do the injection."

I wish Fox would let Kevin Kennedy "report" blind items like that on their Saturday afternoon pre-games. It might give me an reason to wake up before 3:53 pm. I love guessing games! Leskanic, right?

Doug Mirabelli makes me really really glad that Cashman somehow got Jose Molina for some AA minor-league lifer reliever.

So if I read that right, we'd be looking for FOX or XM employees who played for the Sox in 2004? Seems unlikely...
Or does Kevin Kennedy have another job somewhere?

He must consider Millar or McCarty to be colleagues. Can't think of who else it could be. As for the perp, I mean, could be anyone. Millar, Foulke, Damon? I bet it wasn't Byung-Hyun.

"who was with the Boston Red Sox in 2004, told him that he (the colleague) witnessed, for a fact, a member of the '04 Red Sox injecting himself in the buttocks with a needle full of PEDs."

McCarty's a good choice.
The next question is what does he consider a member of the '04 Sox? Certain players whose posible use was publicly speculated were principal members before the trading deadline, if you catch my drift.
It's a useless exercise, and the information isn't worth anything, considering the source, but it's still perversely fascinating, for some reason.

Cashman somehow got Jose Molina for some AA minor-league lifer reliever.
I took this at face value when I first saw it, but then I saw this:
Jose Molina career OPS+: 64 (61 in 2007)
Doug Mirabelli career OPS+: 86 (63 in 2007)
