As the Sox face elimination in 2007, their chances for 2008 already got better. And they didn't even have to sign anyone, trade dead weight, post a $51M fee. All they needed to do was to let the new Yankee brass do their thing. Amen. Unfortunately, next year is next year, and tonight the Sox face elimination at the hands of a superb baseball club, one with a manager.
Josh Beckett takes the mound trying to lead the Sox back to Boston, while CC Sabathia makes another attempt to pitch more like himself and less like a slightly skinnier version of Bartolo Colon. One simple message to the Sox' pitching staff: no more touchdowns allowed.
And as for the puppies? We had them taken care of, all they did was micturate all over our goddamned rug. Comment away.

Right on - forget the puppies. We need a friggin German Shepherd (or several) tonight.

That rug really tied the room together, did it not?
Posted by: Devine | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 06:34 PM
It did. But the dudes abide nonetheless.
Posted by: Jackie (SF) | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 06:40 PM
Lucky for us, I put a Sox jersey on my Shephard every game we watch together.
Posted by: Pete | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 06:40 PM
we need german shepards, dobermans, bull mastiffs, Rottweilers and Rhodesian Ridgebacks, they hunt lions for christsakes... bring it back to Boston

Winds between 30-40 MPH, blowing out towards center all night, possible tornadoes in northern Ohio around midnight.
This should be interesting.
Posted by: LocklandSF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 07:04 PM
Don't forget the Irish Wolfhounds.
Posted by: FenSheaParkway | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 07:21 PM
Very good point FSP, they're formidable as well, why don't we throw in great danes too, Mike Lowell sort of reminds me of one with his demeanor
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 07:26 PM
Winds blowing out towards center tonight. Great, should provide quite the launching pad for homer runs.
Posted by: Rob SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 07:28 PM
Not just winds, 40 MPH winds.
Posted by: LocklandSF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 07:30 PM
My boy's got a .700 WPCT (35-15) over the last two years when he wears the jersey.
Posted by: Pete | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 07:30 PM
Wind out to center? I hope the Sox can hit it straight away a little more. Seems like their biggest power threats are a little more to the pull side.
Tornadoes?? Where's Hideo Nomo when you need him?
Posted by: FenSheaParkway | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 07:43 PM
ESPN talking heads (Dusty Baker's) advice to the Indians: "Jump on Beckett early, get him out of there. Also, they need a good game from CC".
Way to go, Dusty. Want to manage the Yanks?
Posted by: SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 07:53 PM
SF thats a great strategy. Ill offer the sox a strategy if i may too. Beckett should give up no runs and the offense should score lots.
Posted by: Sam-YF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:01 PM
I emailed Francona and suggested that the Sox "get like a dozen runs early, and then tack on about ten more in the next six or seven innings".
He emailed back that it was sound thinking.
Posted by: SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:08 PM
Dusty, will the Rockies ever lose a game again?
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:10 PM
Boy, the FOX guys are setting up Beckett for massive disappointment, its like he's the greatest pitcher in the history of baseball to them. Color me worried, what with their almost complete sureness in his pending domination.
I do expect a good deal from CC, though, he's just not as bad as he has performed this postseason.
Posted by: SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:14 PM
Kevin Millar with a pep talk!!!!
Posted by: SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:14 PM
what a surprise, Joe Girardi picks the Indians
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:14 PM
How about that? Tessie, Millar... will the ghosts of 04 make a reappearance?
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:15 PM
Did he pick them tonight, or in the series? One would be defensible if perhaps a minority position, the other a no-brainer.
Man I hope this guy manages the Yankees and wrecks their young pitching...
Posted by: SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:15 PM
He picked them tonight, I pray that C.C again reveals himself to be over his head... we MUST deny these fans the home town celebration
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:18 PM
Joe Buck really looks horrible, perhaps he's finally realized everything he has in his life is owed to his father
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:18 PM
hereeeeeeeeeeeeeee we go
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:23 PM
what a lead off man
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:24 PM

Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:25 PM
YOUK!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Rob SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:26 PM
wonder why no commentators will acknowledge C.C. has been roughed up by the yankees and red sox, this isn't just a case of "not trusting your stuff"
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:27 PM
Wow, what an insight on the "Keys to the game". I'm rooting for the Sox tonight, but only because I don't want the 10-day layoff between now and WS...there's not that much baseball left, I want it to last as long as possible....
Posted by: yankeemonkey | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:29 PM
Manny doubles, CC getting smacked around early.
I agree Ed, you would think that this would be a big issue to them.
Posted by: Rob SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:30 PM
christ manny you are slow
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:30 PM
I want to be the first tonight to say I hate Tim McCarver.
WHY was Manny sent home???? He was out by 20 feet.
Posted by: Tom sf | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:30 PM
ill.
Posted by: sf rod | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:31 PM
2 outs I guess? I'm a little confused myself, C.C. looks bad and we should make him pitch and pitch and pitch... oh well
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:31 PM
Manny gunned out at home.
Posted by: Rob SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:31 PM
maybe we'll get a replay of that, manny may have ran through a sign
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:32 PM
I tell you Manny hates his batting helmet!
Posted by: Sam-YF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:32 PM
Wendell Kim back at third base?!
Posted by: SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:32 PM
Hey guys - congrats Sox fans - early lead (and looks like CC didn't really figure out that as the Ace he's supposed to...you know...pitch WELL)
Posted by: Rob | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:33 PM
Buck trying his best to jynx beckett
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:33 PM

Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:35 PM
ill.
Posted by: sf rod | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:35 PM
What a cheapie. When are we going to get some of those?
Posted by: SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:35 PM
really SF, really
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:36 PM
fuckin bloop
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:37 PM
So the Timster says that hit fell in because Manny is tired?
Shit Another hit.
Posted by: Tom sf | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:37 PM
Well, this is a bad start.
Posted by: SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:38 PM
could have been much worse, now let's finish this inning and get back to punishing fat ass
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:40 PM
Double Play! I'll take it.
Posted by: Tom sf | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:40 PM
Well at least Hafner ground into a DP and limited the damage to only one run.
Posted by: Rob SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:40 PM
OK, good recovery, run for two outs is a fine trade.
Posted by: SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:41 PM
Beckett getting hit very easily. This is not looking good.
Posted by: Rob SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:41 PM
Garko looks like Mirabelli's younger brother
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:41 PM
Another hit, this one on a hanging curve. Beckett erratic in addition to unlucky, he's going to need to pitch better or this season has a good chance of ending.
Posted by: SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:41 PM
I hope Sabathia continues to suck, because this is looking like a high scoring game.
Posted by: Tom sf | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:42 PM
I dunno, none of his pitches have been bad, good hitting and bad luck on that bloop more than his stuff
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:42 PM
Good swing Buck? He looked like he was going to keel over! That is a DEFENSIVE swing!
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:43 PM
RUNS...NOW!
Posted by: SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:44 PM
SF, I just talked to Kielty, he's going to hit a bomb for you
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:46 PM
can you say BALL
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:49 PM
Jeez, not another one of these strike zones. Martinez moved his mitt about 8 inches, clearly, back over the plate to frame that. WTF?
Posted by: SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:49 PM
Kielty dosen't have the cache to take that pitch, but it looked in to me too.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:49 PM
i would be remiss, if i didn't take this oppertunity to welcome tribe fans back to the "jake". hard to imagine the indians where struggling to get 24,000 clevelandnites off the couch for the last 5 years.
Posted by: sf rod | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:50 PM
Just want consistency, Gerb. He calls that one way, he has to call it the other way. That's all I ask.
Posted by: SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:51 PM
make up call there, yikes
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:51 PM
I seriously hate towel waving at any sporting event. It's so dumb. No other way to put it. Add a wave to the mix and you'd have some seriously world-class mental midgetry.
Posted by: SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:51 PM
SF: agree with you completely, absolutely. Good luck with that. :)
Posted by: attackgerbil | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:52 PM
When was Coco's last really meaningful hit? Been a while...
Posted by: SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:52 PM
reverse jynx by Buck? no, that would be a strike out... can't wait to trade this asshole, Ellsbury is indeed the centerfielder for 2008
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:54 PM
Jeezus, Coco. Swing the damn bat. Why couldn't Ellsbury play, again? Not exactly batting A-Rod 8th, playing Jacoby, right?
Posted by: SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:55 PM
Lugo looks terrible. Coco looks terrible. The only action in getting on base is Tek getting hit by the ball.
This is shit on a stick.
Posted by: no sleep til brooklyn SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:55 PM
Francona is too much of a player's manager... won't give up on Coco eventhough it's a win win taking a chance with Ellsbury... is Ellsbury going to hit worse than Coco? Is that possible?
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:56 PM
Crisp and Lugo....The wonder twins.
Posted by: Rob SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:56 PM
Wow, did Hafner really ground into a doubleplay after Beckett let up two straight hits to start off the bottom of the first? He has been absolute shite this series.
Posted by: AndrewYF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:57 PM
we gotta trade coco this offseason, he's become expendable and his contract should bring some suitors
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:57 PM
Is Dane Cook killed in "Mr. Brooks?" if he is, i'd like to rent that immediately
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 08:58 PM
OK, moral dilemna. My three year old is sitting nicely watching the game. But he keeps yelling "There's only one October!" Do I make him spend the night inthe backyard?
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 09:03 PM
i wanna "loosen" tim mccarver up.
Posted by: sf rod | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 09:04 PM
Make him watch "Mr. Brooks": you see what happens to the bad man?

Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 09:13 PM
Pedroia AB right now, is the first of this series that reminds me of a Sox AB, keep fouling pitches off
Posted by: Kris SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 09:13 PM
DUSTIN!!!
Posted by: Ed | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 09:14 PM
Yep and the base hit reminds me of the sox this year. Thats 2007 Sox at bats
Posted by: Kris SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 09:14 PM
I'm so glad it ended in a hit for the little guy
Posted by: rootbeerfloat | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 09:14 PM
Pedroia with what seems to be a rare hit.
Posted by: Rob SF | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 09:14 PM
