Right now it looks bleak here in Yankeeland. What with the best player in baseball leaving; Joe Torre and Don Mattingly in LA; and Mo, Jorge and Andy all possibly departing; it seems unlikely Cashman will turn around this sinking ship. And then you think of miracles and unlikely events. Two seconds left, 60 yards to go. What does it take? It takes creativy. It takes little things like laterals and finding parts of your roster that you can improve. It takes a trade that leads to another trade. Does Cashman have what it takes? Is he the Trinity University of general managers?
I posted this mainly because it's one of the craziest football plays I've ever seen. Thanks to my friend for emailing it.
Andy Pettitte told KRIV television in Houston that he will play for the Yankees in 2008 or retire.
"The New York Yankees committed an awful lot of money to me and put it in my hands, gave me a player option and trusted me with that option," Pettitte said. "It probably wouldn't be real honorable for me not to do anything other than if I shut it down or go back and play for the New York Yankees. I gotta figure out in my mind exactly what I want to do." What I really don't understand is that there were a lot of things that he didn't needed to say, but did anyhow. Ah well.

I heard about this play on M&M Dog but didn't know what they were talking about. Thanks for posting - what a ridiculously great play and I thought the announcers did a great job setting up the situation and then calling the play.
(And I don't think the Yankee situation is anywhere as dire as Trinity's team was or that the ship is sinking...but still loved the link)

I like Pettitte too, and think he's a lot more genuine than ARod ever was. I believe him when he says he'll either retire or stick around.
Having said that, I think he retires. And not just because I would love to see it as a Sox fan.

Am I missing something? I thought Pettitte was pretty much always just considering re-upping with the Yanks or retiring. This doesn't strike me as particularly new.

I realize now you weren't entirely serious, but still -- you had a season that most other teams would be proud of. You came back from last place, 14.5 games back, and took the wild card. And you at least won a playoff game, something the Angels, Cubs, and Phillies all failed to do.

I'm really worried about out ability to come back from 3-1 against the Indians. It was a great season though, either way.

Yeah Lockland, we should have pitched Beckett in Game 4 last night. Wakefield was attrocious. Now we have to face Sabathia and Carmona in two straight games. Like you said, we've had a great season.
Speaking of great seasons, I bet ARod doesn't opt out. He said he belongs in New York, and he wouldn't lie. Right?

Well, that and the fact that using the play that jumps readily to mind, Flutie's Hail Mary, seems really inappropriate.... I'm definitely not a BC fan but that play still is the first one to occur!
But I admit, the Trinity play works just as well, as does the Stanford Band play or LSU vs. Kentucky a few years back or several others.

'Bleak' doesn't strike me as the best description. More like tumultuous. But things aren't actually bad.
A-Rod
Yanks had 81 more runs, 72 more RBI, & 11 more HR than 2nd place. If we have a 3rd baseman 1/2 as productive we'd still have the biggest offense. So it's a drag not to have b-ball's greatest player, but it does free up $$ for pitching, our achilles heal of 2007.
Pitching
I think it's more likely than not that AP will stay. That means AP, Wang, Joba, Phil & (?, Kennedy). Then we can focus our efforts on foritfying the bullpen, starting with re-signing Mo.
Starting over is unsettling, but also much more exciting than last winter.

J, while I agree with the excitement over starting over and I am not that sad to see A-Rod leave, your point re: offense without A-Rod is misleading I think. Abreu gets much better pitches to hit because A-Rod is next. Matsui/Posada/whoever get better pitches to hit because A-Rod has gotten on base. His presence in the heart of the order boosts everyone's numbers as is the case with any hitter who has both great average and great power together. Plus without him they have exactly three right-handed hitters (including switch hitting Posada and Melky) which makes for a very unbalanced line-up. With Sheffield also no longer around and Giambi now a shell of a shell of a shell of what he used to be, Matsui on the decline and Damon raising a big fat question about whether his offense is on a steep decline or he just had a bad year, the Yankees offense without A-Rod are very punchless. They need a solid offensive addition.
