Wha Happen?? O's-Yanks Gamer XII
Daniel Cabrera turned into a pitcher the Yankees have never seen before, resulting in only two Yankees getting a hit. There were scoring opportunites as Cabrera walked six batters, including Melky twice (who played some great center field, but saw his hit streak end) but the Yankees could not convert. Robi Cano committed a costly error. Karstens and Brower were awful, and Villone didn't help much either. Ick. Let's just forget about that game (possibly their worst of the year) and move on to today.
It's Phil Hughes facing Erik Bedard on a getaway game for Baltimore. Detroit's in town tomorrow night. Let's get this train back on the tracks, starting right now. Lineups follow, comment away.

I was at last night's abomination. Ugh. At least I was able to honor Scooter by leaving early to beat the traffic.
Also, it's not entirely true that Yankees had never seen that side of Daniel Cabrera before. He pitched a gem at the Stadium last year, no-hitting the Yanks up until 2 outs in the 9th. Robi Cano broke it up with a clean single. So yeah, he's definitely capable. Still embarrassing though.

Interesting lineup from Torre to rest some regulars and get some righty bats in there against the tough lefty. hope it works.
clean first for hughes. dj on with a hbp w/ 2 out for the yanks in the bottom of the inning.

Great reference from A Might Wind AG!

Thanks, nice catch, Lockland. :)

I celebrate Christopher Guest's entire body of work, the man is a genius in my book.
"You can't really dust for vomit."
Posted by: LocklandSF | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 01:34 PM
I agree about his work. It's a Zen thing, like how many babies fit in a tire.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 01:41 PM
Lost my cellphone, so spent most of the morning figuring out what to do instead of checking here.
Guest is awesome.. I loved Best of Show.
In any case, Hughes walks 2 in the second, but does K's 3. But that brings his pitch count to 35.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 01:45 PM
You've started a Christopher Guest movie quote-off in my office, everyone is in stitches.
Ok, back to my game thread.
Posted by: LocklandSF | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 01:45 PM
The Yanks do nothing with their inning.
Bedard at 30 pitches.
Hughes gets two outs before Patterson ruins the no hitter (heh) with a line drive single.
Hughes is throwing a lot of pitches.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 01:54 PM
The O's created a run again with the speedy Patterson stealing second right before Markakis singles him in. 1-0 O's.
I'll say it again though, Hughes is throwing a lot of pitches - already 55 pitches, and only 31 strikes - lack of control there.
Posted by: | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 01:57 PM
Tejada flies out to end the inning. 1-0 O's and Hughes is at 56 pitches.
Posted by: | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:01 PM
Both anons are me.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:01 PM
Bedard shows why he's leading the league in K's by striking out Molina.
Comes back 3-0 to make it 3-2 before walking Melky on 7 pitches. Nice patience from the 22 year old.
Let's Bet-on-it!
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:04 PM
I didn't see the HBP by Jeter - was it payback or just a missed pitch?
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:06 PM
Betemit strikes out on 5 pitches. Bedard is nasty.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:07 PM
Jeter strikes out on 6 pitches. Wow.
Got his pitch count up though - 53 pitches through 3.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:12 PM
Jeebus. Being no-hit AGAIN?!
Posted by: yankeemonkey | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:12 PM
Millar pops out, Huff singles, Mora singles, and Bako strikes out.
A wild pitch moves 2 runners into scoring position.
Redman singles to drive in two before Roberts flies out.
This #9 guy is giving us trouble all series!
Hughes now at 79 pitches after 4.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:26 PM
ARod leads off the inning with a single to break the no hitter.. =P
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:28 PM
And then swipes second. Nice theft. Unfortunately, Matsui grounds back to Bedard and ARod has to hold.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:31 PM
ARod flashing that 40-40 speed and steals second. Okay, that was only his 15 stolen base.
Matsui grounds out to the pitcher, and unforunately does not get enough to move ARod to third. One out.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:31 PM
Jorge dinks one back to Bedard that pushes ARRod over to first. Posada was running at top speed and almost beat it out; they only had him by three strides.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:33 PM
Posada grounds out to pitcher as well, but this time softly enough for ARod to go to third.
If ARod was at third, I don't think he would've scored though, so maybe it's moot.
Here comes the recently slumping Philips.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:34 PM
ag - nice to have you back? No kids today? ;P
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:35 PM
Phillips grounds out to end the inning. He's 3 for his last 26. Ooof.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:37 PM
And Andy doesn't do anything with it. ARod stranded.
Bedard at 70 pitches.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:38 PM
Sold him to the gypsies for a caravan.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:38 PM
Corey Patterson singles to lead off the O's 5th.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:40 PM
Patterson singles to lead off the inning. Will probably go insane on the base paths..
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:40 PM
CP swipes second on a breaking pitch.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:41 PM
OOF! Jeter should have had that grounder. I think Hughes deflected it so itmight not be an E..
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:42 PM
Tejada flies out, but not deep enough even for the speedy Patterson to score.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:44 PM
Nope, it's an E-DJ. Shallow fly to left and the runners hold. Okay, turn the DP and get out of this.
Uh-oh. Jeter is favoring his right ankle, and the trainer is out to check on him.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:44 PM
Millar looks absolutely RIDICULOUS with those glasses and funky eye black. Did he just get back from glaucoma surgery? Is he channeling Alice Cooper?
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:46 PM
Hughes at 90 pitches after a foul from Kevin "School's Out For Summer" Millar makes it 0-2.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:47 PM
Markakis stole second to kill the DP chances.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:49 PM
Well, the groundball DP anyhow, as it's a DP as Patterson is gunned out at home by Duncan. Wow.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:50 PM
Nick swipes second. Shelley with the GUN! Patterson out at home by a mile tagging on a fly to right by Kevin "Welcome To My Nightmare" Millar.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:51 PM
Wow, they just replayed that throw. Wow.
Wow.
Umm... wow.
Now he rips a single to left to leadoff of the Yankee fifth.
Bobby who?
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:53 PM
Hughes at 94 pitches and probably done for the day - 5 IP, 6 hits, 2 walks, 4 K's, 3 runs, 2 earned. Not bad, not great.
Shelley promptly singles to lead off the inning.
Posted by: | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:54 PM
Duncan does his best Ty Cobb.
Shelley, you can't make it that obvious you are trying to kill Tejada, as much as I appreciate the effort.
He's gonna get plunked the next at bat.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:55 PM
Duncan out on interference at second, Molina at first with the FC. Now a DP from my young hero ends the inning.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:56 PM
Welcome back Sean Henn. First appearance since August 2nd.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 02:59 PM
Henn game log 2007
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 03:00 PM
Henn effective in the O's 6th; Huff grounds out 4-3, Mora flies out to 8, Bako grounds out 6-3 all on short counts. NICE.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 03:03 PM
I'm pretty sure I read it on waswatching, but Wilson Betemit really reminds me of Tony Gwynn appearance-wise.
That 2-1 was low away, but called for a strike.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 03:04 PM
Bedard rings Betemit up on a sick slider.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 03:06 PM
Payton reached on an infield single to ARod, then Markakis singled to center. Edwar Ramirez relieves Henn (glad to see Ramirez back), and Tejada flies out to center.
Bedard is still in there at 106 pitches in the Yankee seventh. We need baserunners, boys.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 03:35 PM
Duncan rung up looking on a pitch a half-foot off the plate. Bedard has the ump in his pocket on that outside corner to righties.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 03:38 PM
Ramirez K's Kevin "Blue Turk" Millar, then completely embarrasses Aubrey Huff for another K.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 03:44 PM
Mora grounds out 6-3 to end the O's 8th. Nice work from Ramirez. Okay boys. How about now?
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 03:45 PM
How long has it since we scored?
Posted by: | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 03:50 PM
Wez me.
Melky not getting it going.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 03:50 PM
Pinchhitting Cano singles the other way with the meat of the lineup up. This might be the inning to do it!
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 03:51 PM
The worst case scenario plays out as the captain grounds into a double play. Bah.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 03:53 PM
The Yankees have three out left to avoid something that hasn't happened in eight years. The last time they were shut out over consecutive games was May 12th/13th 1999, when David Cone lost 0-1 to the Angels, and Hideki Irabu lost the next game 0-2.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 03:56 PM
Boy oh boy the offense is struggling today. Bedard was excellent though...
Posted by: John - YF (Trisk) | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 03:56 PM
Core Patterson lays down a perfect bunt on Ramirez to no man's land between the pitcher and third.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 03:57 PM
Anyone else listen to the game on radio today? Funny moment...
Sterling says If I were the Yankees I would sign Molina to a long term deal, he's the best backup catcher we have has since Girardi.
Suzyn says well they have bigger issues first like signing Posada, River and Alex.
Sterling then says with a tremendous amount of confidence as if it were a done deal...Well of course, but that's a given signing those 3, they have to sign those 3.
Sometimes his passion gets in the way of his thinking straight.
I wish I had that same confidence Mr. Sterling.
Posted by: John - YF (Trisk) | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:01 PM
I have no idea why Sterling is so confident that we are getting any of those three back, and I fear.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:02 PM
Agreed AG, I think 2 of the 3 return...
Posted by: John - YF (Trisk) | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:03 PM
And ARod comes to bat against Danys Baez. I had better start really appreciating these ABs from Alex while I can.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:03 PM
ARod delivers his third single of the game. He's 3-3 with a walk. Pay The Man.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:04 PM
Man oh man he is so good in the 9th...Nice hit Alex.
Posted by: John - YF (Trisk) | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:04 PM
Godzilla grounds one up the middle. First and second with nobody out.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:05 PM
Ok Ok here we go...Let's go Jorge...Hip Hip...
Posted by: John - YF (Trisk) | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:05 PM
Matsui singles, ARod to second. Can the Yanks make something out of this?
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:05 PM
Jorge up. That first pitch was INSIDE. Gah. This ump is on my last nerve.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:05 PM
Baez is way high, way away on the next two pitches to even the count. Walker up in the pen. Way outside again. It's full to Jorge.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:07 PM
That was ball 4.
Posted by: John - YF (Trisk) | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:07 PM
C'mon Jorge! Struck out. Bah.
Here's Philips, hopefully to extend the inning just a little bit.
Posted by: | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:08 PM
Posada chases the high cheese to go down swinging. One away to Abreu, pinching for Phillips, which means Walker will come on to face Bobby.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:08 PM
And by Philips, I meant Abreu.
Ya, it was probably ball 4, but you have to swing at that, too bad he didn't get a piece of it..
Posted by: | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:08 PM
Baez does come out. Walker comes in.
Posted by: | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:10 PM
Reveal yourself mystery man...
Posted by: John - YF (Trisk) | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:10 PM
All the anons are me. Let's go Bobby!
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:11 PM
Full count to Bobby. Let's roll!
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:14 PM
Bobby also swung at a ball 4. Grrrrr.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:14 PM
Wow, that 2-2 looked like a strike. Bobby grounds the payoff to first, advancing the runners. Two away. Let's avoid sordid history, Shelley.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:15 PM
Yeah, the grounder he pulled was inside.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:15 PM
Moves the runners over, but neither of the runners are important except for the batter.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:15 PM
SHELLEY DUNCAN!!!!!!!!

Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:16 PM
Slam DUNC!!!
Posted by: John - YF (Trisk) | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:16 PM
Wow, that was so effing awesome.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:16 PM
Does that deserve a curtain call all great lords or baseball class and etiquette?
Posted by: Woosta YF | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:17 PM
Slam Dunc... Love it.
Now Molina on base with a single to right.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:17 PM
Is this curtain call good enough?
Posted by: | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:17 PM
WOW! I just arrived in San Francisco, got on my computer and this is what I'm greeted with! Perfect
Posted by: Nick-YF | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:17 PM
That was me again. This thing is hating me today.
Woosta read my mind, haha.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:18 PM
Two out dinger, on verge of being shut out to tie the game, yeah, tip your cap, Shell.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:18 PM
Seriously he is going to cripple someone with those forearm shivers!!!
Posted by: John - YF (Trisk) | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:18 PM
Bradford comes in to pitch to Melky. Joba should be available today, and probably Mo if it comes to that.
Wow just wow.
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:20 PM
Little known fact: Duncan is an understudy for Lennie in an "Of Mice And Men" summer stock production in Poughkeepsie.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:22 PM
Jesus, Duncan is a monster, amazing.
These are two crazy EXCITING games.
Posted by: LocklandSF | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:22 PM
Lightning in a bottle indeed.
Let's go Melky!
Posted by: Lar | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:23 PM
Melky almost doubles to the corner, but it's just foul. Would have been game. Now he fans and we are going to free baseball, ladies and gentlemens.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 04:23 PM
Lockland - tell me about it, I would tune to the Sox game, except for the obvious reason.
Damn, Melky just struck out.
