Offensive Fouls: PaleSox-Yanks Gamer X
As you probably know by now, ARod didn't get a hit last night. Much to the chagrin of the New York rags, the Yankees won anyway with five Yankees homering including two by Jorge, but ARod was still the lead story, which draws our first foul. I suppose that winning three in a row, combined with another loss from Cleveland that leaves the Yanks only two out in the WC hunt doesn't rate. It was a curious game to watch with so much focus on Alex despite the other current ridonculous barrage from the battery, but I suppose that is understandable. All I know is the sooner this arbitrary milestone and sidebar to the season passes, the better off we all will be. Pete Abe with the stat-of-the-day: "As you may have heard, A-Rod is 0 for 21 since hitting his 499th home run. But he shouldn’t feel too badly. It took Jimmie Foxx 61 at-bats to get to 500 and Harmon Killebrew 43."
The other foul came in the eighth last night, when knuckler Charlie Haeger fluttered an errant pitch into Robi after Jorge's second shot. Home plate ump Tom Hallion ran Haeger immediately and with great vigor, causing a minor melt-down (and rightfully so) by Ozzie Guillen. Even the Yankee announcers were incensed.
Today, it may be a bit more difficult task to be patently offensive as Jon Garland has been a somewhat stingier with doling out the round-trippers this year than previously in his career, and is coming off a serviceable start aganst Toronto. He faces Roger Clemens, who gave up four runs in a six-and-one-third-inning losing effort in Baltimore last week. Jeter gets a day off today; we'll get a look at Wilson Betemit at short and in the eight slot of the line-up, which follows. Comment away.

Jon. But he's pitching well (relatively) this year. I hope we pummel him anyhow. Gooo Yanks!

Michael Kay is going to be pissed. On his show Tuesday he said Betemits "Posterior" had gotten too big to play SS. You show 'em Wilson! Nothing wrong with some junk in the trunk.

The worse part of the tabloid coverage of Arod, is that other national news outlets pick this up and then talk about it as "the fans are turning against A-Rod" which couldnt be further from the truth judging from the applause he gets at every AB. Its unbelievable to me how a handful of writers and headline editors could be responsible for driving this guy out of here. Who are they gonna write about if they do!? Jeez.
Posted by: sam YF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 12:51 PM
So what happens to Cairo anyhow?
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:09 PM
Cairo is a pinch runner/1b. perfect first for the rocket.
Posted by: YF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:16 PM
after 1 inning of scoreless work, the Rocket's ERA is at 3.86, my predicted number for him on the season. I am brilliant!
Posted by: Nick-YF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:16 PM
Clemens sits them down 1-2-3 on 11 pitches, though Thome gave it a ride.
End of half, no score.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:16 PM
garland: working fast and throwing strikes, induces the opo to 2nd from jd.
Posted by: YF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:17 PM
Abreu singles. Here comes Alex.....
Posted by: YF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:20 PM
I wish in MLB Gameday when you click on a pitcher it gives you better pitching stats. Whatever it's showing it's not very useful.
Abreu getting it started with a single. This would be a great time for 500!
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:20 PM
john sterling just called abreu's single the salad before the steak and potatoes
the steak and potatoes? A-Rod.
go figure.
Posted by: sam YF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:20 PM
Nice to know I'm not alone today! Yay!
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:20 PM
Grounder to short. Maybe next time.
Posted by: YF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:21 PM
Bah, ARod grounds out on the 2nd pitch. After 1, Garland's at 12 pitches, no score.
Posted by: | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:21 PM
let no one question nick's genius.
meanwhile, would it kill yes to give us a couple of shots of betemit out there? hello! show us the new guy!
Posted by: YF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:23 PM
Well, Nick is still correct after back to back singles by Konerko and Piercan'tspellhisname.
Posted by: | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:25 PM
A timely DP would be nice. Let's go!
Posted by: | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:26 PM
Both the anons are me. "Remember personal info" forgets a lot, apparently.
Dye doubles in a run, man on 2nd and 3rd, no outs. Ack.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:26 PM
Shit. This is all going to hell quickly. 2-0 after the liner to first by erstad. this following the double by dye with 2 on.
Posted by: YF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:27 PM
And the hitting continues as Erstad singles in a run, now runners at corners, still no out. Clemens at 18 pitches.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:27 PM
john sterling just called abreu's single the salad before the steak and potatoes
Does this mean if Abreu gets thrown out of the game he's tossed salad?
badump bump
Posted by: SF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:29 PM
It was brilliant while it lasted.
Posted by: Nick-YF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:29 PM
Another liner. 5 knocks in a row and it's 3-0, men on 1st and 2nd, and no outs. Roger not fooling anyone out there.
Posted by: YF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:29 PM
Wow, the Sox are pounding Clemens right now. 5 straight hits, and they all came out swinging - 5 hits on 9 pitches.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:30 PM
The #9 hitter finally gets a fly out to Melky. Yuck. At least now a DP gets out of the inning, let's go Roger!
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:31 PM
And Cano boots an easy inning ending dp ball after a fly to center. no bases juiced, still just 1 out. Not our day? Still early.....
Posted by: YF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:32 PM
And Cano makes Roger work more. Probably a DP ball, but yuck.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:32 PM
Get the force at home, but the bases still juiced for a very dangerous Thome.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:33 PM
Let's hope the Yank's bats are as alive as they've been.
Since, as I'm typing that Thome drives in a few more. Unearned runs, but still counts.
5-0 Sox.
Posted by: | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:35 PM
2 more in. Gonna be hard to reel this one back in against garland. at least we've already won the series.
more runs!
christ. 6-0. is this rocket's worst outing ever?
Posted by: YF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:36 PM
Still me. Konerko doubles in another run. 6-0. Are we forfeiting this game?
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:37 PM
Ol'Rog should've wore his "Depends" today; casue he's shitting the bed... literally. Ugh.
Posted by: bloodyank78 | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:38 PM
AJ continues the tear with a single. 8-0 Sox. Cano's error obviously huge now.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:38 PM
Alright, Dye doubles again. Did Torre fall asleep?
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:41 PM
Roger quickly trying to make his million dollar starts morph into million dollar two inning outings.
Posted by: Brad | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:41 PM
8-0. Anyone for checkers?
Probably don't want to be anywhere near roger in the clubhouse later.
Michael Kay should stop picking on Cano. Not his fault Roger can't get anyone out.
Dye doubles AGAIN THIS INNING. Holy shit.
The good news: a couple of grand slams and we're right back in this thing. Put in Duncan!
Posted by: YF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:41 PM
Finally, Myers comes in. Definitely too late, but hey. Maybe he should get Igawa in there too, I mean, what more damage can he do, right?
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:41 PM
This is definitely not the steak I was looking for.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:43 PM
How much is that per pitch?
Posted by: Brad | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:44 PM
Erstad works a 7 pitch walk. What the hey.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:46 PM
Karstens now pitching with the bases loaded. At least it's a low pressured situation, even with the bases juiced.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:47 PM
And Myers loads the bases. Welcome back to the Bronx, Jeff Karstens!
Posted by: YF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:47 PM
> Worst outing ever?
This one is certainly up there.
Best (or worst, I suppose) comp: Boston vs. Minnesota July 23rd 1995 1.1 IP, 8 earned runs, 9 hits, 2 walks 61 pitches
Posted by: attackgerbil | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:48 PM
Well, tons of the runs were unearned, so ya. Still a bad outing though.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:49 PM
Karsten finally got that elusive third out that apparently no one else can get.
Okay, maybe _now_ ARod will hit that 500th. And a few grand slams would be nice too.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:50 PM
It's not so fun this game. Okay, lunch time.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 01:51 PM
John Sterling " You can bet on Betemit"
Cashman is a genius...
Posted by: sam YF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:02 PM
Wilson! Jeter Pipped?
Posted by: YF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:02 PM
Wow, Matsui singles, Posada doubles, Cano singles to score Matsui, and Betemit HR's to make it an 8-4 game. Maybe I should take more lunches..
Philip then singles. Still nobody out.. this feels like the top of the inning, only better. Well, it'll actually be better if they also scored say, 5-6 more.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:04 PM
why do the white sox suck so much? effing conspiracy...
Posted by: mp | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:04 PM
Ca-Ca-Ca- Comeback!!
Posted by: bloodyank78 | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:13 PM
OK, I don't miss Proctor so much now! Welcome to New York, Wilson! I'm watching the game on Gamecast...did he get a curtain call?
Posted by: nettles-yf | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:14 PM
Finally, A-Rod's off the schnide. RBI, baby!
Posted by: nettles-yf | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:15 PM
did he get a curtain call?
Dude, people get curtain calls in Yankee Stadium if they can count to four successfully. What do you think?
Posted by: SF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:16 PM
Baseball is WEIRD............
Posted by: Blah | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:18 PM
did he get a curtain call?
yankees get curtain calls for buttoning their uniforms properly
Posted by: Ric | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:18 PM
Jon Garland channels Tim Donaghy. Can't let these games get too out of hand, now!
Posted by: SF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:18 PM
I knew you'd pipe in w/a comment in response to nettles-YF question about the curtain call. LOL.
Posted by: bloodyank78 | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:19 PM
I think you could say that a 3 Run Homer your first AB on a team is a good reason for a Curtain Call.
Posted by: Blah | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:19 PM
Is it me or does Boone Logan's name sound better switched around?
Posted by: snowballa | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:21 PM
"Did he get a curtain call?"
Funny stuff, guys! Thanks. :)

Tie game
Posted by: Blah | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:22 PM

1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8! CURTAIN CALL.
I want to see Nook Logan hit against Boon Logan.
Posted by: YF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:27 PM
Ridonculous! Let's put all that behind us.
We're playing a seven inning game, the score is 0-0.
Wish I could be watching this. Or do I...
Posted by: attackgerbil | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:28 PM
1-2-3 inning from Karstens. Nice to see that from the bullpen!
Posted by: nettles-yf | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:32 PM
OK, Wilson's honeymoon is officially OVER! I hope he got booed all the way back to the dugout! (j/k) :)
Posted by: nettles-yf | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:35 PM
For the record, as I posted before, the Yanks and ChiSox have set a record for most runs by two teams in the second inning of a ballgame. Previous record: 16, set twice, the last time in 1936.
In 2004, the Rangers and Tigers did you guys two better, by scoring 18 runs -- 10 for Texas, 8 for Detroit.
Posted by: Paul SF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:36 PM
Why did Podsednik PH for Thome?
Posted by: nettles-yf | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:44 PM
Called strike one on Erstad. CURTAIN CALL FOR KARSTENS!!!
Posted by: mp | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:46 PM
CURTAIN CALL FOR KARSTENS!!!
Why not? Might as well keep the trend going.
Posted by: Brad | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:54 PM
Wow, I just came back from lunch, and the Yanks came all the way back. That's something, though Karsten gives up a 2 spotter to Dye. Part of me wished Dye got traded to the Sox just for today afterall!
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:56 PM
Bobby grounds out and Logan comes out. Bukvich? Never heard of him.. (but we will if he gives up #500!)
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 02:59 PM
I just read an article in the Daily News (my lunchtime rag) and on the subject of curtain calls, apparently Shelley did not come out for his latest HR. Just FYI.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 03:00 PM
ARod singles - that's two straight hits. Definitely curtain call worthy.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 03:03 PM
Another note - Matsui's next HR will be his 100th. It's not a big deal, but nice anyhow. If he had played in the US his entire career it wouldn't be hard to see him with a good career (maybe 300-400 HR's), but ah well.
He grounds into fielder's choice, and here comes the hot hitting Posada.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 03:06 PM
Uneventful inning as Posada grounds out. It's still early though, as we head toward the top of the 5th.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 03:10 PM
An unforunately eventful top of the 5th. Pod singles with two outs to drive in the lead off double. 11-8 Sox. Nothing's out of reach at this point, but Karsten is actually pitcher of record here! Let's hope the Yanks will hit their way back into it..
Again.
Posted by: | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 03:16 PM
"Bet on it" walks after Cano flies out. C'mon Andy, let's get it going again!
Posted by: | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 03:27 PM
Andy flies out, but JD singles to bring Melky to the plate.
Oh ya, anon's are me. This keeps on anoning me. Grumbles.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 03:29 PM
Yanks did nothing with that inning, and the Sox goes down 1-2-3 against Villone. Bottom of the 6, Yanks down by 3.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 03:42 PM
Abreu is the salad that hits a HR. 11-9 Sox. If only there were more people on base!
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 03:45 PM
HOLY SHIZZLE! How about a curtain call for Saladboy?
Posted by: mp | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 03:46 PM
ARod pops out. 500 will have to wait. But I still rather we win this damn game!
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 03:49 PM
Especially with Sox and Indians both winning today.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 03:50 PM
Matsui and Posada both struck out. At the end of 6, it's 11-9. The Yanks need to crank it up a notch!
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 03:56 PM
Here come the Sox again. They refuse to give up. Grumbles.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 04:02 PM
The Yanks need to crank it up a notch!
Ha, Lar. They score 9 runs and need to crank it up?
Posted by: Brad | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 04:04 PM
Richar tries to tag and take on a pop to shallow right. Cano guns him down to end the Chicago seventh.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 04:08 PM
Hey, 9 is only good when err, the other team scores less than 9! =)
It really should've been enough. The pitching fail us here. And slightly on the fielding.
Though just as I said that, Cano throws Richar out at home for a DP.
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 04:10 PM
Including today, the Yanks have scored 165 runs in the 22 games since the break — 7.5/game. And today ain't ovah.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 04:10 PM
He was out by a lot. Richar must have been thinking that Cano was sleeping out there.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 04:11 PM
How many times does someone make a good play on the field and then hits the ball well the same inning? No idea, but Cano has a chance to do that right now!
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 04:12 PM
Cano is showing nice patience in this at bat.
Posted by: attackgerbil | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 04:13 PM
Don't undestand why you'd be trying to tag on a questionable-depth ball when Jim freakin' Thome is about to be at the plate. Man, the White Sox suck...
Posted by: Paul SF | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 04:13 PM
Cano showing what he's capable of when he's hot - taking 5 straight pitches (3-0, then 3-2), fouling 2 off, and then and works a walk. Great AB there.
Jeter comes in for "Bet on it". Let's go Captain!
Posted by: Lar | Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 04:15 PM
ag: "Today, it may be a bit more difficult task to be patently offensive".
Apparently you're patently wrong. =P Though I wished Clemens held up his end a little bit. Grumbles.
