Can't find a Betemit
Sorry about the title. Anyway, Buster Olney is reporting that the Yanks have dealt Everyday Scott Proctor for Wilson Betemit.
My first take is that Joe Torre must be in a lot of pain right now. The second one is that I like this deal for the Yanks. I think Joba slides into Proctor's role and is better, and that Betemit offers the Yanks a viable option off the bench.He is much better than Miguel Cairo. Third, I have a feeling that in the next few years we'll be viewing this trade as a big steal.
Nick please don't say that...Joba can't step into that role. Let that role go to Brian Bruney or Chris Britton, please. This kid is good, he has some arm issues and running him into the ground ala Proctor is not the way to go.
As for Wilson, ehhh. There is potential there, which is more then we can say for Cairo.

Trisk, you know you make a good point. I misspoke. I really mean that Viscaino is the new Proctor, and that Joba is the new Viscaino...Well, that won't please you either. My guess is that the Yanks will add another reliever before the end of the day. I see Wheeler or Qualls perhaps.

Betemit is a guy scouts have always liked, who has nice upside. He was buried on the Dodgers, but still managed 10 homers and a good OBP and slugging percentage off the bench.
Proctor is basically a victim of Torre. He did admirable work for us, but it's good we're getting anything for him valuable.

If all things stay the same Vizcaino is the 8th inning guy, Myers and Bruney take over Proctor's work load. Britton, Ramirez, Joba, etc...all fall in behind.

lol, no not at all. I think my analysis was too quick. I basically agree with your take about Joba. But I think Proctor's departure considering how bad he has been lately is addition by subtraction. I do hope the Yanks bring in another reliever not named Joba. You're right about that.

Steve Lombardi at WasWatching thinks this is an acknowledgment on the part of the Yanks that A-Rod is not coming back next year.

Wilson is 100% an insurance plan for Alex. Nick, I hate to say this, but I have said it before Alex is gone...

That's what Olney said yesterday when he clued in on this trade, but I would ammend that statement to read "the Yankees aren't going to pay Alex to bring him back next year."

I don't buy the theory though. The Yanks tried to make this deal last season with the Braves. This exact deal, and Proctor was actually good. I think they like Betemit a lot regardless of the A-Rod situation.

I like reading waswatching, but Steve can be a bit hysterical sometimes (like yesterday, when he compared promoting Chamberlain for the stretch run to the way the Yankees *rushed* Ryan Bradley in '98).
I think signing Betemit is good insurance, in case A-Rod opts out. He can provide above-Brosius performance at 3B (excluding '98) while the Yankees look to upgrade. I have to think Proctor is almost done. No one has thrown more relief innings than he has since the start of 2006 and he is starting to lose control of his secondary pitches, which seems evidence of fatigue, no?

And don't forget, Betemit immediately becomes our no. 4 HR hitter (behind A-Rod, Posada and Matsui), since he somehow managed to hit 10 HRs in limited playing time (150+ ABs) for the Dodgers this year.

yes he's got power for sure, but to say he immediately hits fourth is a stretch. Where's he going to play everyday, first? Who DH's when he doesn't play? Can run Damon, Giambi, and the rest of them out there everyday.

Brad, I think you misread what y76 said (because I did the same until I read it again). It just means he's 4th on the team in HR's (#4 HR hitter).
I always liked Proctor. I don't know how this helps the team though.. (this year, anyhow)
