Shea Hey! (Reprise)

We knew it had to happen sometime. One of the least likable members of the Red Sox ever is now being discussed as a target of the Yankees. I believe this would officially confirm that the Yankees are, in fact, evil.

I confess that back in Shea's Sox days, I didn't follow everything quite as closely as I do now. Was he the same big whiny baby in Boston that he seemed to be in

based on his stats over the last 12 months, hillenbrand is an aging downgrade from phelps, with attitude issues. i'm not sure why the yanks would pursue this. maybe it says something that it's only (?) in the post.

Well, I was nervous that the Yankees might rebound this summer with Jason Giambi off the active roster. A trade for Hillenbrand would certainly right the ship! ;-)

Not sure I can pinpoint why, but I really, really didn't like Shea when he was on the Sox. When he was traded for Kim, I think he left in a blaze of ignominy, if I remember correctly, blasting people on the way out of town.

Shea does not appear to be a likable fellow. But, Paul, if you're rooting for a team that's recently picked up Julian Tavarez and Julio Lugo.....glass houses...anyways, you don't really need extra motivation to dislike the yanks, right?

Hey, I like Tavarez. It's actually hard to see where he got the reputation he did (well, except for that spring training punch to Gathright). He's weird and zany and goofy and entertaining, but he doesn't seem mean-spirited or anything but a good teammate.

Lugo, eh, I don't like him for reasons entirely related to on-field play. By all accounts (except one, har), he's actually a great teammate and a great guy.

It's interesting the number of ex-Sox the Yankees have picked up in recent years. They've certainly not been as successful as Ruth, Lyle, et al. Embree, Bellhorn, Myers. Heck, even Clemens and Damon didn't/aren't coming close to replicating their Boston days in pinstripes.

I don't see how the fact that a team might have dislikable characters mandates that someone not point out another dislikable character potentially moving to a dislikable team. The "glass houses" line is a weak attempt to paint Paul as something of a hypocrite, which is pretty darn lame as far as I am concerned.

I imagine you root for plenty of people you don't like, this doesn't make you a hypocrite, it makes you something called a "fan".

I think one thing we all need to accept is the fact that these are BASEBALL PLAYERS we are talking about here. Not the most enlightened group of guys out there. Considering the background of a lot of these guys and relative level of education, I'm amazed some of them aren't actual Klan members.

You get my point. I'm not saying it's an excuse, but they are products of their environment, as we all are.

i think that i see what you're saying, lockland sf, but i can't let someone off the hook that easily. i'd like to think that i wouldn't, anyway.

if i found out that the guy who ran the pizza place around the corner was a bigoted homophobe skinhead, i'd probably get my pizza elsewhere. i wouldn't look into his upbringing or level of education.

i admit that this is an extremely weak analogy, but i can't overlook a guy's intolerance because he's a ballplayer and ballplayers don't know any better. that's just another prejudice, in a way.

i try to keep the personal lives of these guys separate. (especially when dealing with family, etc. who knows what goes on behind closed doors?) but when someone has a history of saying intolerant things, on several occasions and it gets out from from different sources, it does change my view of these guys as people, whether i like it or not.

i hope we don't get shea. i guess that is my point.

As much as I like the Yankees, I have to say their style of staffing reminds me of a Just In Time factory. Get what you need right away for today ,forget about tomorrow, we will worry about it then. The management has a bad habit of picking up castoffs to fill the positions, if they are be traded from a "brand name team" (as Kitty Kat used to say) how good are they? Another Randy situation, a little aged, not quite as rep would qualify, but bring him on use him and release him or try to justify by hanging on for an extra season, knowing the stuff isn't there any more. But, we have to win that title this year and worry about next year when it gets here. Personaly, I would like to see the team build with youg guys that actually surprise the management (Cano,Melky, Phillips, Wang). These were last minute fill ins because a trade couldn't be made in time and gee, look, they are good enough to keep on the active roster, Why not try again, we just might get lucky. I could go on forever about this style of management, let's be glad we have a Joe Torre around to keep juggling the good guys he does have.
