Always Be Closing?

Jonathan Papelbon finally weighs in on the issue of money and his role on the Sox.  Unfortunately, it's hard to understand what the hell he's talking about, other than the fact that yes, he thinks about money, and yep, he wants to stay healthy in order to make that money.  Seems pretty logical.  Other than that, we're not sure that Babelfish would even be helpful.

i like money too...i'm curious to hear from the rest of you with your opinions about it...not sure i agree with pap's statement that "...you can’t make money if you’re sitting on the bench..."...has he ever heard of carl pavano?...

i think what jonathan is trying to say is that he knows he's not getting paid until he can prove he'll stay healthy. and i can see the logic in that.

that said, if he remains even close to what he's been the last two years (aside from the subluxation) and the red sox don't throw bushels of money at him, it'll be me leading the mob on yawkey way with torches and pitchforks.

Despite Paps' bungled explanation of things, it distills down to "I want to stay healthy and play for many years, so I won't be exploited". That sounds great, common sensical, but is he really going to tell Tito that he isn't available in October on his third night running, to clinch a series? Reality (and the emotions of a guy like Paps) dictates that this is mostly talk, even as if is sensible talk.

I for one wouldn't mind seeing the Sox lock this guy up in the next year or two; there's no rush right now as he's cost-controlled, but why not see how the year plays out, watch his health, and if it remains solid make him modestly wealthy and a linchpin of the roster?
