Just got off the phone with Brian Cashman. He said that Mike Mussina was at the stadium in Oakland today to receive treatment on his hamstring. He has not been placed on the disabled list.

I'm breathing a little bit easier now.

The yankees are old. But, Sheff played 40 games and Matsui 50 last year. Pavano 0. Cano missed two months. Unit was also old. They managed 97 wins.

It's always been incredibly frustrating to me that no matter what injuries occur or how bad the Yanks start playing, they get these tremendous performances from fill-ins who have no business doing what they're doing. Aaron Small's 10-0 is the perfect example. Is he even IN baseball now?

And FYI: Small and Chacon went 17-3 for the Yanks in 2005, thank you very much. Small does appear to be out of baseball while Shawn is in the Pirates bullpen.

Meanwhile, it may be just me, but I was actually cool with Moose missing a month now than with arm trouble in September.

That would leave another wide open hole for Clemens and let them figure out what they've got in the system for mid-season moves.

Small and Chacon are both a couple of the absolute worst pitchers around, but they most certainly stepped out of themselves for that second half. I remember Yankee fans talking about how the rotation was going to shape up the next year with both guys in the rotation, as if all they needed was a change of location.

Chacon definitely had the ability to pitch like that in NY. Unfortunately he decided to take the Joel Pineiro route and suck despite his ability.

No argument here - well other than the fact that Chacon doesn't really have "stuff", as they say. But Boston seems to be, lately anyhow, the place for guys with "stuff", like Clement and Pineiro, to display both sides of the spectrum to us all. Either they're unbelievable, or they can't hit the catcher.

Well, the Yanks got the best half-seasons out of the careers of Chacon and Small, and it enabled the Yanks to win another AL East title and get to the playoffs.

A job well done, and now they're gone. End of story.

I haven't been watching Pineiro closely. How has he looked?

Good a few times, a step above Oliver Perez's last start last time. By which I mean, he quite literally couldn't have hit the broad side of a barn. Not too concerned, he still looks OK.

On the plus side, Boston may be promoting a lobsterman who happens to be dominating AAA sometime in the next week or two. Maybe it's our turn to make something good out of a steaming pile of crap. No disrespect to Hansack, but he didn't exactly show much promise (apparently) when he was with Houston.

And I'm only saying this because it's relevant; I'd comment it if it was one of ours, too...but Hughes made his second start today, and it did not go well. 5 earned, 5 innings 1 K, 2 BB. Their website is down so I can't see what else he did. Just a bad day, and at least this could quiet down calls for him to get rushed up before the end of April.

Pineiro looked very good in the game I saw (in person. Did I also mentiuon I saw Matsuzaka's first start in person? Har.). I felt bad for him out there with the two walks. He didn't have any control, but the bunt that loaded the bases wasn't his fault. It should have been an out, but Cora was slow covering first.

The main thing is that it looks like his good games are outnumbering his bad games and seem to be gaining. I can't imagine its easy to change your role as a pitcher AND your mechanics in the same year.

Peter Abraham is now reporting that Pavano is gonna miss his start tomorrow due to arm problems. I never thought id be so worried about loosing this guy. I am now waiting for the yankees to call me to start because they are running out of options quick.

I didn't hear it anywhere, I'm just hoping. :-) Probably should have made that a little clearer. They can't ignore him if he keeps pitching the way he has been though, right? I do think he had a story on redsox.com, or at least a mention, which can only be a good sign. I'd check, but mlb.com isn't working.

Right-hander Devern Hansack continues to show why the Red Sox are so high on him as a late-blooming prospect. Wednesday marked the second time in as many starts that Hansack notched 10 strikeouts for Triple-A Pawtucket. He is 1-0 with a 0.84 ERA.
