Blockbuster! The Rocket Returns!

"The teams that are involved, I think they've got really good clubs that are together, and if somebody stubs their toe and my phone rings in May, I might have to think about it."

--Roger Clemens, February 17, 2007

Well, that didn't take long. It turns out the call came in March from Joe Torre and Brian Cashman. Sources close to Roger Clemens and the Yankees are confirming that the aging great has decided to come to the Bombers' rescue. With Chien-Ming Wang injured, Andy Pettitte's back acting up, and Carl Pavano starting the opener, the Yanks supposedly put the full-court press on, luring the Rocket back with a generous contract offer topping $22 million for the period he will pitch. As part of the deal, Clemens' target start date with the ball club is early May. Never a dull moment in Yankeeland!

...confirmed by Sportscenter. Shit.

You had me going there for a moment until I looked at my calendar.

...is this a joke? How come there's no mention on any other websites?

OK I got it...

In other news, Terry Francona resolved the issue of MLB kicking Johnny Pesky out of the dugout by sending Alex Cora to Pawtucket and giving Pesky, 88, a full place on the 2007 roster. On Sunday, reporters abandoned their scrum surrounding Daisuke Matsusaka, rushing instead to snap pictures of Pesky shagging pop-ups and turning double plays with Dustin Pedroia.

Didn't even believe it for a second, hah.

the damned internet and its real-time information transfer ruins April Fools.

Apparently, this was the most plausible April Fools joke to come up with:

I do not know Ben, and I'm pretty sure neither of us are copying each other. Pretty crazy, no?

I guess not.

You heartless bastard.

Actually, if I were Clemens, it would amuse me greatly to announce I was coming to [whichever city I hated more between Boston and New York] and then spring an APRIL FOOLS at the press conference.

You scooped me on this one. But I have another scoop on Steinbrenner & the Yanks on my blog. Check it out.
