YF,
You have this all wrong. Dice-K's numbers mean nothing. It's only spring training and he's the next Cy Young (the person I mean -- the name of the award will be changed to the Daisuke Matsuzaka).
Hughes is an overhyped Yankee. The Yankee farm system never produces anyone and is immeasurably inferior to the Sox farm system. Hughes can't hold Delcarmen's jock.

For those that don't know, if you buy furniture at Jordan's Furniture here in New England and the Red Sox win the World Series this year, you get 100% of your money back. You can thank Barry, Elliot and Uncle Warren for this absolutely brilliant promotion. So yesterday I made a rather large bet on the 2007 Red Sox in the form of a brand new couch.
Just in case I needed more of reason to be insane for the next 7 months.

Clay Bucholtz's is another overhype Redsox pitching prospect. He could be the next Rich Garces..

The Yankees farm system never produces antone? Are you kidding me?Mariano,Pettite,Lowell,Wily Mo Pena,Mariano,Jeter, Posada, Wang,Cano and Bernie ? Should I go on?
When was the last time Redsox produces a superstar like Jeter and Mariano? Ooops..
Don't tell me, Ortiz and Manny came from Redsox Farmsystem? Also Varitek was from Mariners

Sarcasm is an evil mistress.

Mike G,
John is a Yankee fan. He was being sarcastic. I know sarcasm doesn't come through that well on the computer but come on, even the most biased, Sox fanboy would not say something that stupid.
Posted by: bloodyank78 | Monday, March 12, 2007 at 01:26 PM
I see you beat me to the punch Lockland.
Posted by: bloodyank78 | Monday, March 12, 2007 at 01:27 PM
My bad, I thought He was redsox fan.
Posted by: Mike G | Monday, March 12, 2007 at 01:46 PM
No worries, like I said, the computer is a horrible medium for sarcasm. Does anyone know if MLB.TV is carrying the game tonight? I'm looking forward to seeing how ol'Glass Carl fares against some of the Sox mashers.

hahahah. I love it.

Both yankees.com and redsox.com are reporting that the game is on mlb.com -- but will it work in nyc?
Big Brother (Bud) knows where you are.

Is anything happening with Kerry's hearings about MLB and DirectTV? It would be great if he would order that networks like YES and NESN can sell directly to the internet or individual cable customers.

When was the last time Redsox produces a superstar like Jeter and Mariano?
Roger Clemens. End of discussion.
Posted by: Brad | Monday, March 12, 2007 at 04:28 PM
Why not throw in Baba Ruth? Of course Mo and Derek are a little more recent (so are Wang and Cano).
I would have said Papelbon myself.

Mariano! So good, you have to list him twice!
Thread jack, but "Fark" has a photoshop contest with Schilling.. it's pretty amusing, if nothing else..

After Babe Ruth left St.Mary's school for boy he played for the Baltimore Orioles. He was later traded to the Red Sox in 1915.
Posted by: bloodyank78 | Monday, March 12, 2007 at 05:18 PM
sorry john, baba ruth was a oriole farmhand before he was a sock. so we'd have to scratch that one. as far as producing superstars the likes of jeter, the sox gave the world freddy sanchez. who, if you don't know, is the same palyer as jeter minus the hype and the paycheck.

damn. BY beat me to it.
Posted by: sf rod | Monday, March 12, 2007 at 05:24 PM
Schilling was first in the Red Sox organization, like him or not, he's a pretty good HOF candidate.
Posted by: LocklandSF | Monday, March 12, 2007 at 05:37 PM
Of course, the Orioles weren't a Major League team at the time, and the farm systems didn't really exist as we know them today. So that's an interesting debate.

There are two related threads:
Despite the fact that the Yanks go out and outspend everyone else, the teams since '96 have had a lot of home-grown, major contributors. It's actually a tribute to the Sox, pre- and post-Theo, that they got a lot of good players from other teams on the 2004 Champions for significantly less than the Yanks. Now Theo says he's going in a different direction, but his $103 million roll of the Dice shows he's not drawing a line in the sand.
Obviously, the Rocket is a future Hall of Famer. He pitched 133 innings in 1984. Is Nomar the biggest player since then? He came up 12 years later, but like Donnie Baseball, he probably won't end up in the hall.
Mo and Derek will be in the Hall. Both came up the year before Nomar, but Derek only for a cup of coffee.
Bernie probably won't make the Hall, but he was extremely important for the 4 World Series and holds lots of Yankee and postseason records. Look for his number to be retired?
Jorge and Pettite probably won't make the Hall, but again, were very important for the WS rings.
Sox fans may disagree, but Yankee fans see bright futures for Wang and Cano, and have been very happy to have Melky.
Theo is stocking the farm system, but the last ten years favor the Yanks, and Cash has some good players he's holding on to.

"who, if you don't know, is the same palyer as jeter minus the hype and the paycheck."
seems like you're the only one who knows that. That's your story and you're sticking to it I guess.
Posted by: Nick-YF | Monday, March 12, 2007 at 06:46 PM
Okay, Schilling. They let him go, they got him back when he was 38 (?), and he was key in 2004 and the WS. You can go either way with Schilling.
Posted by: john | Monday, March 12, 2007 at 06:50 PM
oh i'll always stick to my story. last years stats will back that up. throw all the pecota warp and vorp you want at it. pirates vs. yankees lineups will put holes all over those numbers.
they should really come up with a statistical index for a player who is willing to move to a different position because other players on the team would serve the team better at that postion. freddy would win that too.
Posted by: sf rod | Monday, March 12, 2007 at 07:05 PM
somehow, I'm going with the idea that even with last year (when Jeter was a better player than Sanchez, who had a very good year), Jeter's reputation and all that hype is based on a body of work. He's been an excellent player since 1996. Sanchez has been good for a year. But I guess Sanchez deserves the same respect.

it makes me happy that dice-k got smacked around by the orioles

it makes me happy when someone calls themselves boogy down! Hello, I'm boogy down, nice to meet you.
Posted by: Brad | Monday, March 12, 2007 at 08:57 PM
freddy doesn't need respect. he's got numbers. but how can you not respect a guy who puts the same numbers as jeter at 1/20th the price.
Posted by: sf rod | Monday, March 12, 2007 at 09:37 PM
well, I didn't say I don't respect Sanchez as a player. He's just not as good as Jeter. He never has been. Not last year. Not the preceding years. This is about as uncontroversial a statement as there is.
Posted by: Nick-YF | Monday, March 12, 2007 at 10:46 PM
Freddy Sanchez had an excellent year last year. If he does it for another 10 years, turns in clutch postseason performances, including some astounding fielding plays, is the acknowledged leader of the team, and a sure Hall of Famer, then yes, he's another Jeter. But you can't say that now.
If he does it for another 10 years, he'll make as much money as Jeter too. He makes 1/20th the money (actually less) because he's a second or third year player. This is just a dumb discussion.
BTW, why'd Boston let him go after 2 call ups and 50 abs?
