As a Yankee fan I'm bummed about this.

why? He's mediocre, has a low k-rate, seems to rely a lot on his defense (are the sox good in that department?), and is a a homophobe to boot. Seems like a pretty meaningless signing to me. Why be bummed as a yanks fan? I'm bummed the Sox ever signed Ortiz.

A low k rate because he is an extreme groundball pitcher, he has two great pitches, a hard sinker, and a tough slider. He gave up only 2 home runs from 2003-2004. He is also a lot more reliable than Kyle Farnsworth.

Also, their defense contains a gold glove third baseman and second baseman, and if Cora starts as SS, a very solid defensive shortstop. If not, I'm sure they will make a good trade for a defensive SS, as that was one of their goals this off season, to shore up their defense.

Nick, he's not mediocre. He's a very solid, proven workhorse, and he adds depth to the bullpen. He has closed, so he could do it in a spot, he's consistently given 70+ innings in the recent past, and he is a righty-killer (they slugged .318 against him the past three years). He's not being touted as anything but additional depth for the bullpen. He didn't cost them a draft pick (the Cards didn't offer arbitration, a bonus). He gives them flexibility to move Mota in a deal for a SS or CF, potentially. And, he buys time for Hansen to develop more in the minors, which is probably necessary. Also, he's wicked scary looking, and has a reputation for being a psycho, which is always a plus. And, he tunes a mean guitar, so Bronson Arroyo is very happy.

Seriously, It's a low-risk and smart move, not "meaningless", except perhaps to you. It is nothing earth-shattering, for sure, and the one thing I agree with in your statement is that it has little to do with the Yankees directly -- not everything does, despite what you guys think ;). This one is simply about improving the depth of the Red Sox.

He might have been a "bargain" because of his awful 2nd half last season. The guy is trending in the wrong direction (home run rates going up, his hat getting that much skankier, his Thorazine prescription running out, etc) but fine, he's a solid pick-up. Chalk up another victory to the geniuses on Yawkey Way.

So, what are the rumors involving Mota and trades for a CF or SS? What names are involved?

Wow, cranky Nick. Very un-Nick like! Tavarez' "awful second half" was really an awful 8 innings in September (more specifically two bad appearances, one of which was in the last game of the season, a 12-6 blowout win for STL). Call it what you want - I'll say it's a small sample.

And who said the pickup was "genius"? It's smart. Not quite the same. You're awfully prickly about this pickup, and it wasn't even made out to be anything but reasonable and intelligent. Where's the hyperbole there? Did I write that “it could prove to be the best reliever signing of the off-season”? No. That’s what you typed. About Kyle Farnsworth.

And Regarding possible trades, there aren't any rumors about Mota being moved. I was just pointing out that this adds depth, allowing that consideration.

hung-over version of Nick. Sorry. Also, I was trying to get into the spirit of yanks fan versus sox fan. It's been a little too genteel here of late.

Also, I just hate Tavarez.

Plus, Farnsworth will be the best signing of this off-season. Trust me.

Those Knicks kept me at the bar too long last night. Too long.

God, you are spending quality time at bars drinking to the Knicks? That's a hell of an admission, though I guess beer-goggling the Knicks is about the best way to make that team seem better, current streaks notwithstanding.

I don't know. Deadspin echoes my sentiments. They are starting to kind of freak me out.

I think the Tavarez signing is a very good signing, above "average" and below "genius." I'm a little bummed because personally, I was hoping the Yankees would sign him (over someone like Villone).
Also, a ground ball pitcher in Fenway is a better bet than the reverse (everyone would like a guy that strikes 3 per inning but there aren't a ton of those guys out there). I think it's a good pick up for the Sox and all I can hope is that Farnsworth's size will be the determining factor when "'Crazy-Man' Tavarez vs. Kyle 'I-like-Tackling-Tings' Farnsworth" go at it this summer in THE CAGE at WWE's SummerSlam™.

here's a crazy rumor:

"A Philadelphia Phillies scout has reported that Bobby Abreu (RF), Jason Michaels (CF), and Robinson Tejeda/Gavin Floyd (both SP) will be traded to the Red Sox for Manny Ramirez, Matt Clement, Kelly Shoppach/Andy Marte/Kevin Youkilis.

“This is basically a done deal with some minor issues to iron out. I would anticipate a press conference later this week.”

saw it at baseball musings

maybe we should get bellhorn back

That insane (and unreported in any other location) rumor was posted on some Phillies fan site a few days ago. Still no press conference scheduled for tomorrow, at last check, would probably be the "later this week" mentioned.

yeah, turns out the rumor is a complete hoax. I saw it on Musings and thought it might be legit. Idle hands...
